Passengers escape as blaze engulfs coach near Chester-le-Street

Images have emerged of the moment a coach burst into flames on the A1 near Chester-le-Street.

The vehicle caught fire south of the County Durham town at around 9.25am.

Everyone got off safely and there were no injuries, the Fire and Rescue Service said.

Fire crews from Durham, High Handenhold and Spennymoor attended the scene on the hard shoulder of the north-bound carriageway.

The blaze left the coach gutted and caused lengthy tailbacks on the A1.
