Authorities say the right wing tip of the AeroMexico Boeing 737 "acted like a hook" as it was crossing a service road on the way to an arrival gate on Saturday.

The aircraft remained in Los Angeles on Saturday night "pending a review by AeroMexico staff to determine the extent of the damage and it's flight worthiness", the airport said.

Police said the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were likely to be involved in the investigation.
