One killed and four injured in Hamburg supermarket knife attack, police say

One person has been killed in a knife attack at a Hamburg supermarket, police say.

The knifeman suddenly began attacking people in the shop with a kitchen knife, killing one person at the scene.

As he fled, he injured four more people before being arrested.

German police said the man is a 26-year-old born in the United Arab Emirates and there were no immediate indications of religious or political motive.

"We have no clear information as to the motive or the number of wounded," they said. "It was definitely a lone attacker."

Police said the attacker was injured slightly when passers-by tackled him as he fled the scene.

German police have been on high alert since a series of attacks in the country last year, including an attack on a Berlin Christmas market in which 12 people were killed when a hijacked truck ploughed into crowds of people.

Germany goes to the polls in September for the country's parliamentary elections and security is a major campaign issue.
