Ben Stokes bowls England to victory over India in a thrilling first Test

Ben Stokes took the crucial wicket of Virat Kohli as England wrapped up a 31-run win over India on the fourth morning of an enthralling first Test at Edgbaston.

After James Anderson had Dinesh Karthik caught at slip in the opening over of the day, Kohli reached his half-century before the India captain was pinned leg before wicket as he moved across his stumps and departed for 51, having taken his side to within 53 runs of victory.

With the crowd up, Stokes sensed an opportunity and three balls later he nicked out Mohammed Shami to leave England two wickets from victory.

Adil Rashid then trapped Ishant Sharma leg before wicket and it was left to Stokes (4-40) to finish the job, ending Hardik Pandya's determined knock to put England 1-0 up in the five-match series.

With the match hanging in the balance, India needing 84 to win and England five wickets, Anderson had got England off to the perfect start with the wicket of Karthik (20) with the sixth ball of the day, Dawid Malan going some way to making up for his three dropped catches in the match with a low grab at second slip.

While Kohli remained though, India were still firmly in contention and together with an unusually restrained and disciplined Pandya, he gradually chipped away at the runs required.
