BT calls on Worldpay's Philip Jansen to be next chief executive

BT's new chief executive has been confirmed as Philip Jansen - the current boss of payment services firm Worldpay.

The telecoms company made the announcement a month after Sky News revealed advanced talks to secure his signature.

BT said Mr Jansen would replace Gavin Patterson, who had been facing investor pressure over the company's direction, on 1 January.

Mr Jansen used the statement confirming his appointment to pledge a focus on customers and technology.

Mr Jansen said: "In a competitive market we will need to be absolutely focused on our customers' needs and pursue the right technology investments to help grow the business.

"I'm excited to get to know all the people at BT and work together to take the business forward."

BT faces a number of stiff challenges during the next three years, including implementing 13,000 job cuts announced by Mr Patterson shortly before his exit was disclosed by the company.
