Michael D Higgins wins Irish presidency by landslide

Michael D Higgins will serve a second term as Ireland's president after a landslide election win.

The 77-year-old was one of six candidates competing for the largely ceremonial post.

He won 822,566 votes, returning officer Barry Ryan said.

Mr Higgins said: "The people have made a choice as to which version of Irishness they want reflected at home and abroad.

"It is the making of hope they wish to share rather than the experience of any exploitation of division or fear."

Much focus has been on the runner-up, Peter Casey, who gained a fifth of the vote.
